Here’s a song finally finished:

http://soundcloud.com/stn_band/1-03-strengthless

So finally finished “Abba Father” which is Sobre Todo Nombre’s EP. These dudes have been playing for the longest time but hadn’t been able to record anything seriously, so I’m pretty happy to have been able to help these dudes get their stuff out there. It’s not very common to see bands like them here in Bogota, i mean bands that actually put their whole selves into their work and that you can see and feel the passion that they have towards the music they make. I love working with bands like these, although there are very few down here.

Well anyhow, here’s the album’s art which was done by a dude in Sweden, he plays in a band called Safe Mode, and he totally owns at designing stuff.

Well, as for the audio goes. I got the chance to produce, record and mix the album, and Jason Mass from defeater mastered it. I really liked how it came out, the dudes wanted it to sound fat. We didn’t want to exaggerate the midrange in order to sound ridiculously loud which i’m glad, but overall thicker sounding. I forever fell in love with the band when they told me, “it doesn’t have to be the loudest recording, we really want it to sound full and big” And i think we managed that since it came out real punchy.

We tracked drums at Artico, used a DW kit, whole bunch of nice pre’s and good mics. We tracked drums in one day which was kind of a exhausting for the drummer, but it came out great. I really like how the drummer plays, i really dig his way of structuring the fills and his drum parts. So we tried to maintain the drums as accurate as possible to what he had during the preproduction and we focused a lot on fixing the guitars up so they would be what we wanted.

The problem they had, is what most bands struggle with here. And that is with the constant change of band members, Its very hard to have a project that requires high levels of teamwork if band members are constantly coming in and out. I think that the drummer and the vocalist are the only ones that have been at their current posts for a while. So because of this reason they hadn’t been able to record, and also their guitar parts all sounded different. Thus, we spent quiet a while fixing them guitars. I mean, we were doing the preproduction, and i would hear a riff and the guys would be like, “oh that riff was made by our old guitarist” … thing is the old guitarist had left about 3 years ago, so we were stuck with a 3 year old riff that wasn’t even a creation of the current band members. So we got rid of all of those and of all of the excessive  repetition some of those had, but we tried maintaining the harmony and feel that those riffs had. Which was a very fun thing to do! Because coming up with riffs is kind of easy but making them fit within the context of the song and trying not to change stuff too much was the bigger challenge, I think we ended up changing about 90% of all the guitar parts. Which I think was totally worth it!! And HAD to be done in order for the record to be appealing.

We then later reamped the guitars at Artico using a 6505+ and a marshall 1960’s cab.

We tracked vocals here at my home studio which was great since we took a while to get everything like we wanted it to be. I really like working with their vocalist cause we get each other a lot and there’s a lot of trust regarding how to arrange the lyrics and what not.

Mixing was pretty cool, I really like mixing with bands present since they more than not know exactly what they want. And these dudes really know what they want, so it makes my job a lot easier. We mixed through the course of a few days and then we set aside a whole day to finish the mix.

Anywhos, here’s the band’s links so go check them out NOW!

Ok so i’ve been away for like the longest time! But i’m trying to actually post now!

So recently I finished recording The Tryout, they are this pretty cool band of like… southern-ish/everytimeidie-ish/2step-ish/hardcore. Stuff came out pretty well! :) We recorded 9 tracks total… but this includes 2 bonus tracks that were recorded differently from the other 7.

here is my favorite song off of the recording! :) http://soundcloud.com/riserise/la-verdad-de-los-sabios

I was away for about a month and a half, now we are picking up back where we left of with the preproduction and guitar tracking, we’ve been making some pretty cool upgrades on some riffs and are going through the songs making sure we like what we hear.

Inspiration can’t be forced so in order to be productive we went out for lunch and ended up playing pool for like the longest time ahha! I won 30 to 29 it was intense!

hahahaha! :) it was a good day! plus i drove a motorcycle for the first time ever :) pretty cool.

Esos grandes brazos férreos te laceran, te laceran y alimentan mis espejismos. Ilusiones de un paraíso, compra y
venta, ilusión, desilusión, autodestrucción. Vidas sintéticas, inservibles, despiadadas con tu vida y la mía. Encerrada,
reducida a destruirte, a destruirte. Vidas sintéticas, la arquitectura del fin, invasivas, la esperanza que se ha ido.
Miro al reflejo soy yo, soy yo. Al verdugo reconozco mi rostro, mi rostro.

So, Sangre & Fe is FINALLY done! :)

Here is an overview on how the whole project went and some insights about it. Today is Tuesday May 24, 2011, i’m currently in Loves Park, IL visiting my brother since my beautiful niece Sofia was born on the 10th of may! :)

So the record is being duplicated now (i think haha) and i can’t wait for the thing to go public! :)

As far as i know they are launching two songs to the public, which are  ”La Historia de… (i can’t remember the rest)” and “7000 Robles”. 7000 robles is a song that’s getting a video clip, which was recorded, at a live show. And La historia i think is also getting a video clip but that is yet to be seen. It would be great since that is most definitely one of the best songs on the record!

My top 3 favorite songs of the record are “motivacion”, “la historia” and “refleccion” those songs are just too awesome!

Ok, so here’s how the whole process went.

We recorded a sort of ‘pre-production’ at my studio; it was more of a creation of elaborate roughs or kind of a practice recording. We tracked all of the 11 songs and laid out the session, and organized our game plan. We tracked everything for these ‘demos’ and we created tracks for everyone to practice with on their own. At this stage we visualized what we wanted and set our goals sound wise. Which were basically 3 different guitar tones, high gain, crunch and clean, one bass tone, what we wanted out of the drumkit and decided upon using 2 different snare drums. On vocals it was pretty straightforward. We also wanted some level of production on it, with a few effects here and there, to polish it a little but still aggressive and not weird sounding in any way.

Some time passed after this and we began tracking, we booked 4 days at Alterna, in order to track drums.

On drums we used and assortment of drum parts, a catalina kick, Black Panther snare, and Ludwig centennial snare, we used pearl masters toms, and a pearl export tom. All cymbals were AAX except a LP icebell. We miked that Frankenstein up with: blue kickball, senneheiser e901, 421’s, sm57, shure sm81’s, and pg 81’s, and for rooms we used a Neumann 103 and a blue bluebird.
Tracking went good but a bit intense since the drums on the songs are insanely fast! We finished tracking just in time to check out form the studio so it was all good. We later moved into editing which took a while due to time constraints.

We hadn’t still tracked any guitars when the guys from Play attenchon came to play a show in Bogota. They, being friends with the guys from Sangre & Fe, did some vocal featuring on the record. The melodic parts you hear on the album are done by those guys! J

We later continued to tracking bass and guitars. Since the beginning we had planned on reamping the guitars and bass. So the tracking was done at my studio with a DI. Recording was pretty great but we lots of times ended up going out to eat or play soccer, haha. It was great, but time consuming. Since the dudes are some of my close friends it was easy to get off track. But all the tracks were recorded and it was all good J

We then went into reamping which was lots of fun! This was done at Art&Co, which is a lovely studio! J We booked about 3 days there and it was fun! On guitars we used German’s 6505+ and we used a modified JCM900, we had overdrives on both amps (ts9 and blues driver something). We rented a mesa 4x12 for the peavey and we used the studio’s marshall cab. The cabs were miked up with a 414, a r-121, audix i5, akg c1000s, sm57, and an akg c3000 for the room. Out of these I used all tracks but the c1000 and the c3000. On preamps we used amek, shadow hills, api and chandler.

On the bass we used an svt3 pro and a sansamp bass driver, these went to a G&K 4x10. We had 3 channels on bass, one was a di track to a distressor and a shadowhills preamp, another was on an akg d112 to an api, and the third was a beyerdynamic opus 33 to I don’t remember what! J

After this we got it all nice and fixed, and we began vocals, we recorded vocals at my studio and used a blue bluebird. Vocals took forever! Since the vocalist’s schedule is crazy we had only a few hours on weekends and we doubles every track! So it was a lot of work!

After this editing began, and mixing started as well! We mixed on my studio and then we got a session at Art&Co to check the mix there and pimp it up a bit. It was great hearing my stuff through Genelec 1032a’s, it was very enjoyable yet it was funny. We mixed there for a night and then went back to my studio and the mix sounded a bit thin. It was sooo much clearer than what we had before, but it was thin. So I kind of had to bring back the mix to what we had before but also trying to maintain clarity, and in hardcore that is not easy since everyone is fighting to be heard over everyone else! I really enjoyed how the mix came out!
J

And the last stage was mastering! Which was done by Jason Maas at the Getaway recording, (he has did verse’s aggression, the carrier’s stuff, bane’s latest record, and of course all of defeater’s stuff, plus many other awesome bands) so we were stoked to get him to master the stuff since his ears are extremely in tune to what we wanted. Although the process was a bit stressful since he had to leave for tour and we got him to master the record like the day before he left. It came out great, my mix was kept pretty well and it sounds very punchy and tight. The volume is great, just perfect since I’m on the side of ‘fight against loudness’

Overall it was a great experience. Really had lots of fun working on the project, it is great to see the dudes happy with the work and I really can’t wait for the record to come out! J

so we tracked about 7 songs like a long time ago.. and they want to record more songs now.. so they’re deleting one of the songs they are doing and adding a few more.. so we are tracking everything again in order for stuff to sound the same. Its going pretty well we have done like 4 out or 8 songs. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll finish.. and i’ll upload some pics!
