So finally finished “Abba Father” which is Sobre Todo Nombre’s EP. These dudes have been playing for the longest time but hadn’t been able to record anything seriously, so I’m pretty happy to have been able to help these dudes get their stuff out there. It’s not very common to see bands like them here in Bogota, i mean bands that actually put their whole selves into their work and that you can see and feel the passion that they have towards the music they make. I love working with bands like these, although there are very few down here.
Well anyhow, here’s the album’s art which was done by a dude in Sweden, he plays in a band called Safe Mode, and he totally owns at designing stuff.

Well, as for the audio goes. I got the chance to produce, record and mix the album, and Jason Mass from defeater mastered it. I really liked how it came out, the dudes wanted it to sound fat. We didn’t want to exaggerate the midrange in order to sound ridiculously loud which i’m glad, but overall thicker sounding. I forever fell in love with the band when they told me, “it doesn’t have to be the loudest recording, we really want it to sound full and big” And i think we managed that since it came out real punchy.
We tracked drums at Artico, used a DW kit, whole bunch of nice pre’s and good mics. We tracked drums in one day which was kind of a exhausting for the drummer, but it came out great. I really like how the drummer plays, i really dig his way of structuring the fills and his drum parts. So we tried to maintain the drums as accurate as possible to what he had during the preproduction and we focused a lot on fixing the guitars up so they would be what we wanted.

The problem they had, is what most bands struggle with here. And that is with the constant change of band members, Its very hard to have a project that requires high levels of teamwork if band members are constantly coming in and out. I think that the drummer and the vocalist are the only ones that have been at their current posts for a while. So because of this reason they hadn’t been able to record, and also their guitar parts all sounded different. Thus, we spent quiet a while fixing them guitars. I mean, we were doing the preproduction, and i would hear a riff and the guys would be like, “oh that riff was made by our old guitarist” … thing is the old guitarist had left about 3 years ago, so we were stuck with a 3 year old riff that wasn’t even a creation of the current band members. So we got rid of all of those and of all of the excessive repetition some of those had, but we tried maintaining the harmony and feel that those riffs had. Which was a very fun thing to do! Because coming up with riffs is kind of easy but making them fit within the context of the song and trying not to change stuff too much was the bigger challenge, I think we ended up changing about 90% of all the guitar parts. Which I think was totally worth it!! And HAD to be done in order for the record to be appealing.
We then later reamped the guitars at Artico using a 6505+ and a marshall 1960’s cab.

We tracked vocals here at my home studio which was great since we took a while to get everything like we wanted it to be. I really like working with their vocalist cause we get each other a lot and there’s a lot of trust regarding how to arrange the lyrics and what not.

Mixing was pretty cool, I really like mixing with bands present since they more than not know exactly what they want. And these dudes really know what they want, so it makes my job a lot easier. We mixed through the course of a few days and then we set aside a whole day to finish the mix.

Anywhos, here’s the band’s links so go check them out NOW!
